The end of December marks the end of my first month as a regular illustrator for ROOKIE MAG. If you don't know, ROOKIE MAG is the best website ever for teenage girls.

A sketch, Lydia Davis, and Rodarte

Long time, no blog! I do have some recent drawings to share. First, a spread from my sketchbook-portraits using brush and ink.

I've been reading The Collected Stories of Lydia Davis which has stories ranging from two sentences to 20+ pages. While reading I kept flipping to the back cover and looking at the author portrait, which features Davis with a cat in front of some ivy. After some image research, I found most of her portraits include cats. Below is my portrait of Davis.

I decided to do a portrait of the designers behind the fashion label Rodarte, sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy. I recently watched a lecture they gave at the Hammer Museum about their new book, a collaboration with photographers Alec Soth and Catherine Opie. They talked a lot about growing up in Northern California and what an influence their environment was. I included these references in my portrait: the redwoods, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (roller coaster), the Hubble Space Telescope, and the palm trees of Southern California (where they live now.) Little known fact: Kate and Laura grew up in the small town of Aptos, in Santa Cruz county-the same small town that I grew up in! I found this out after following and enjoying their work for some time.

I haven't thought about Paper Rad in years, and then this fine piece of work popped up.

Found this cell phone pic floating around the net. I saw it before I went to the Minnesota State Fiar, and wanted to see it IRL, but couldn't find it. A lot of the sinage inside the buildings are made out of this great 3D glitter type.

Shuli Sadé "Regrown

This piece is a lot different than the rest of Sadé's work which ranges from architectural photography to paintings.

Love this series of advertisements that were published in Vita.Mn for the Lake Harriet Movies and Music series. Can't find a credit, but I am 99% they were made by Dan Black, of Land Land.

Photo Booth Diary #5

It's been too long! How about an update in my Photo Booth Diary series? Here's how I described this back in 2009 when I posted my first one "...I hope others will share their own. I pulled 16 Photobooth pics, that are self portraits, and made a 4x4 contact sheet. They are better if you don't edit out the embarrassing ones."

2 new paintings

2 new paintings on small wood squares. Trying to do a little painting at night to offset all the design projects I'm working on. The face on salmon colored background is on a piece of dried PVA glue. This material presented some problems, as it was turning back into liquid glue as I painted on it!

Social Science

This Wednesday, March 30 from 7-11 pm is the Science Museum of Minnesota's first Social Science Event. It is an after hours, 21+ event with cash bars, food, music and science related entertainment. I'm especially looking forward to the animals the Minnesota Herpetological Society will have on view, like an alligator and TWO types of Sand Boas. More details about the event here.

I entered a competition to design the identity for this event, and happily my design was chosen. Here is some of my process, and the final designs.

I started sketching with the events features in mind: drink, food, fun, and science.

I decided to combine a beaker and a martini glass to pair the social and the science.

I tried two different directions for type. One inspired by the periodic table of elements (early process above.)

And the second, a hand draw playful treatment to express the youthfulness of the event.

After some feedback from the Science Museum staff, I created a wine and beer glass version of the logo, since that is what will actually be served at the event.

And here is the final mark! I refined the periodic table type treatment and incorporated the Science Museum's 'swirl' logo. Below is my suggested color scheme, the key art/icons I created, and some logo variations. Thank you to everyone at the Science Museum, this project was a blast to work on and I'm looking forward to all the Social Science events coming up!

Twin Peaks Illustration + Process

A while ago I watched the Twin Peaks series in its entirety, in about a month period. I had only seen a few episodes here and there before, and never really got the mania about it. Once I watched it all in order I was hooked. I noticed so many symbols, like chess pieces and lockets, I thought it might lend itself to a good illustration. I started with image research, and making a list of about 20 items I thought summed up the important plot points and main characters of the two seasons.

I did ink drawings of all the symbols in my sketch book.

I scanned in the drawings and started coloring them digitally. Originally I thought the composition would be based off the "Welcome to Twin Peaks" sign. However, I mocked it up and didn't think it filled out the space very well.

So then I though I would have the composition be like a spread from Laura Palmer's diary, with these symbols and notes in it. I liked the composition, but not this weird 3-d diary style I tried.

I stepped back a bit, and re-colored each element, since I wasn't so happy with that either. Here is Laura's cousin Maddy Ferguson, with the new color treatment.

I tried the diary format again, but this time a little more laid back.

This is the final! The process for this illustration was a lot more time consuming than normal, but I was trying out some new coloring and texture techniques, so it's ok. I am happy with the final, and happy to be done with this and move on to other projects. Below are some detail shots.

Brief Apartment Tour

Traditionally I do a room tour any time I inhabit new living quarters. I haven't done one for my new Minneapolis home yet because I am still unpacking and organizing, but here are a few images.

My first before-and-after/DIY/design sponge/apartment therapy-esque project. Last night I was staring at our record cabinet and I thought of a use for some nice old wallpaper I've had forever. I whipped up some wheat paste and applied the wallpaper to the two sliding front panels. (You can tell the before shot by the bad lighting and poor picture quality.)

My grandpa made this bookshelf for me and I used it throughout my childhood. It has been in my parent's garage since, and I am happy to have space and a use for it again.

And this is what's on my drawing table! I've set a goal of blogging once a week, so check back soon.

Girls / Women Publication

I'm pleased to be posting about a new publication I made with Jordan Kay, called Girls (or) Women, depending on how you look at it. You can see more of it on my website, purchase it in my shop, or in Jordan's shop. It feels good to get more printed matter into the world. I had fun designing the format, which has two front covers, liner pages, cut-out dust jacket flaps, sewn binding, lots of different paper stocks/colors, and a fold-out poster! It nearly killed me producing an edition of 50 during my last week in San Francisco, but I'm very happy I did.

3 Works on Paper

I've been working at this specific size, a pice of drawing paper torn in half, four times (aprox. 5" x 7"). This small rectangle works well for my tiny drawing table in my room. That's all!

Magazine Review: The Gentlewoman

Magazine: The Gentlewoman

Issue: # 1 Spring/Summer 2010

Thoughts:
First of all, it was not easy to track down a copy of this magazine. I read about the magazine's announcement MONTHS ago, and was interested to see what the creators of Fantastic Man would do for a female audience. I hunted for it in NYC, but couldn't find it, I think because by that time it was 2 months old, so it wasn't on the front of newsstands. Also it wasn't available online anywhere. I was complaining to Jack that I couldn't find it, and he was like 'oh I saw like 10 copies of it at the downtown Barnes & Nobel." I happened to be at the Mall of America later and found a copy at their B & N.

Editor Penny Martin's opening letter slightly blew my mind. She acknowledges that it's fun to reflect on iconic women from the past, but that "a far more interesting question is undoubtedly: who are the women of the future?" This is so true. It's easier to romanticize role models from the past than to recognize the trail blazer's of today. Unlike most mainstream fashion/lifestyle magazines for women The Gentlewoman is light on the beauty, boyfriends and weight loss. As Martin says:

"I wanted to make sure that for every one part fashion and celebrity, there would be four parts other things, because this is an exercise in restoring the balance that I remember in publishing. Even in the 18th and 19th centuries, women were writing about travel and education and philosophy, and that's somehow disappeared. We have the opportunity to do these things, and yet if 50 years from now you were to look at the magazines we're consuming, you'd think we were just interested in handbags."

In Part 1 of The Gentlewoman there are numerous short interviews with women who have interesting jobs, from an illustrator to an ice cream maker. Instead of questioning the woman about their professions, they described how they deal with an aspect of modern life, from transportation to correspondence. The only downer was Daisy Lowe, a model who was asked about modern housekeeping and gave one word responses. Part 2 is the Features section; which includes a fashion editorial and more in depth interview's with the likes of fashion designer Phoebe Philo and artist Jenny Holzer. The issue is wrapped up in Part 3 with fashion photo essays, including a shoot of clothes without models.

I feel it goes with out saying that under the creative direction of Jop Van Bennekom the design is refreshingly subtle, especially in the context of women's interest magazines. Overall, a

stunning debut and I can't wait for issue 2!

My Month in MN

I've been in MN for the month of June, spending most of my time at my parent's house in Bloomington. My parent's moved while I was in college, so I've never actually lived in this house. However, my parents have had the same appliances and furniture forever, so it doesn't seem that foreign. I've been working on a lot of outdoor projects with my dad. When I was younger I hated having to drag the hose all over the yard to water the plants, and all my other chores. Now I enjoy the gardening and working outside, probably because my normal routine is pretty stagnant.

I recommend a visit to the Como Zoo and Conservatory, because admission is donation based and they now have a butterfly garden. The one rule: "Please do not touch the butterflies. Let the butterflies touch you."

Photobooth Diary #4 & Room Tour

Kelly & the Dream of Horses

Ever since Jack hung these great curtains in our living room, I have been taken by the huge line-filled flowers on them. Recently I have been trying to perfect making seamless/repeat hand drawn patterns. I decided to recreate the pattern on the curtain's as a test. It's not exactly the same of corse, but heavily inspired. Below is my interpretation in a few different colors.

I think the pattern would look great on tights or leggings! Maybe not with heels though.

Six Different Types of Collars

I was thinking about how much I like peter pan collars today, and it reminded me of all the different and sometimes strange types of collars there are for clothing. In my high school sewing class we were given old hand outs on all the different types of collars and selves there are, and then we were tested on them! I remember being fascinated by those handouts, and today I tried to recreate one, but I included the type of person that might wear the specific collar.

2) Arrange them and scan all at once. If you don't have a scanner you could lay them out in a rectangle and take a picture. Tip: I realized after I did it that it would probably look good if you put a solid colored piece of paper on top of the objects, to get a nice background.
3) Number them, and write short descriptions, or just labels.
4) Post and share with you WWW friends!
(note: I got a piece of spam mail, and the subject was "To my WWW friend" and now I want to use it.)

"Flowers for Feminism"

I'm proud to announce that the art director from Bitch Magazine (Briar Levit) has blogged about my publication Cult of Flowers on the Bibliobitch Blog (Bitch's literary focused blog.) It's really exciting to hear someone else describe COF besides myself! I've read Bitch since high school, and it has been an inspiration for me personally and for the creation of COF. I hope everyone who was involved in COF check's this out and knows I couldn't of done it without them. I also set up a 'shop' to sell some copies of COF on my website. P.S. I also recently added a sketchbook section too!

Hello, sorry it's been a while, I've been better about updating my flickr.I'm working on shipping a bunch of copies of COF to people/places that would be interested. I would love some suggestions to add to the list if you can think of any! I've also been keeping busy with my internship (more to show soon):

While in High School I got this mysterious paper-cut silhouette at Goodwill and have cherished it ever since. Recently I went to Duluth and came across this darling paper-cut silhouette at an antique store (right). I had to have it so I could officially start a collection, I imagine one day having a wall full of them!
(TRIVA: This small scissors and ribbon mark was the inspiration for the tattoo on my neck. Originally I wanted the squiggle/ribbon/'S' as well, but the person giving me the tat was having enough trouble getting the scissors to look like scissors, so I decided not to do the squiggle because it would be too messy.)
I came across this magical blog about papercutting, and am now dying to make some of my own! For now I've only begun sketching.

A Glimpse of Summer

I dusted of my drawing desk and have been working with vellum and black and white.
Welcome Jack Randol to the CCR house!
Vincent, a life sized doodle (doll) I made freshman year in 3D was finally thrown out, and then dug out and ditched in the alley by my house.

Estate sale finds! Old books, and a book about birds that perfectly matches my bird caller.

Cult of Flowers Tour

I just tore down my final exhibition at MCAD and will now take you on a photographic tour.

Above are some close-ups of spreads from the magazine, the poster, and the masks.

Here is an example of some of the original art that went into the magazine, and the bundle of 20 copies I made.

Up above are some of the spreads of the magazine, and a look at the cover and liner pages.

The cover/dust jacket folds out to be a poster of Modern and Historical Heroines, featuring women like Ruth Voights and Kitten Forever.
I still have more copies to assemble and since I just freed my bundle from the show I can finally give copies to contributors!

Liberty Print Nike Dunks

Nike released a limited edition of dunks in conjunction with "Liberty" floral patterns from the 19th century! This would be the perfect graduation present to buy for myself, except you can only buy them at one store in New York or on ebay for lots of $$$. Whatever, Nike sucks anyway.

SPRING BREAK '09

Break has been spent mostly on Senior project, other homework, and some fun. First I will show you my solution for a "3d illustration" brief. After a lot of deliberation and anguish I decide I would make my roommates and I riding birds. This first photo is the final, and the one bellow it is a 'behind the scenes' polaroid by binnes.

Below is a screenshot of the liner pages I'm working on for the Cult of Flowers publication. I plan to make it more of a pattern, with small flowers and names under the portraits. However, It kind of took forever to draw 11 portraits I was happy with and thought captured at least some of the likeness of the person, so I wanted to show it now. Snow Crystals

I came across this strange packet in the "Snow Crystals" folder in the MCAD vertical file. It was apparently sent to MCAD by the Library of Congress in 1978. I just realized how timely of a post this is because of the unexpected flurries today. In other news, I was going to post something about my senior project process, but I don't want to.

Cult of Flowers/Art Shanty

I officially have a flickr now: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cult_of_flowers. I will be uploading photos there, rather than here, I think. I visited the Art Shanty's and saw the extraordinary "Ex-Lovers" and stayed long after I lost feeling in my toes.
On another note I basically decided what I am doing for my senior project: An Alternative Magazine for Young Women, entitled (tentatively) CULT OF FLOWERS. I need to collect/conduct interviews/articles for it starting now. If anyone has suggestions for good women role models to interview, or ideas for features or columns, let me know! Sassy magazine (r.i.p) is an inspiration for the content, although I've never actually held a copy. I've also been enjoying researching tons of other magazines for design and layout inspiration.

FINAL NOTE: I found this mysterious .jpeg on my desktop, entitled "bribe" if someone put it there, give me more details please, because the answer is probably yes.

As Of Late:

Now that I have a camera, my life is becoming increasingly more documented. I started a flickr (haven't uploaded anything yet) and wonder if my photos belong there rather than here? But for now here are some of my recent shots.

Went to a strange Home and Garden trade show at the metrodome with my dad. We looked at saunas and house siding and other intersting things.

My dad lent me his bass, and I am practicing. I have started and quit a lot of instruments in my life, but I have a good feeling about this one.

Found this on the free shelf, and had some HD/HL like fun.

Drawing women and thinking about flowers (hint: senior project.)

This camera bag is probably my most tangible and complete break project. It's basically a padded cube with a cool strap and velcro, thanks to Whit for the fabric.

Winter Break Update

Here are a few things I've been up to over break. Whitney and I got digital cameras! Hers is very nice, (see below), mine is ok.

On Colin's Birthday the power went out for a few hours.

I got a jewlery tree (like lauren.)

My drawing table finnaly got some attention.

New Orleans Part One: Swamp Tour

For my first full day in N.O. I went on a swamp tour with some of my family. We drove out to the "west bank", about 20 min. from down town N.O. to Jean Lafitte's Swamp. We stopped on the way for some Po' boys.

The parking lot was quite a scene, cats were roaming all over,

there were plenty of souvenirs, including gator pencils:

The swamp itself was a sight to behold, so different than anything up north.

Here is our tour guide, he said he doesn't live in a shack like Bobby Bouchet from The Waterboy, but his grandparents did.

Since it is winter, the big gators were hibernating, so we only saw baby gators. Spot the gator:

I'll have to go back in the spring when the gators are huge and come up to the boat begging for marshmallows.

I've yet to post you tube vid's on my blog, so here are two of my fave.

1) Dr. Dog's "Fools Life" set to a 1950's bicycle saftey video.

I just recently found out about Dr. Dog (thanks Shea) and they are becoming on of my favorite bands. They sort of sound like The Kinks but they are from my generation. "Fools Life" isn't my favorite song by them, but the way it sync's up to this crazy video is great. The video itself is great, kids in gorilla masks on old cruisers! I know I said only two videos but I was just reminded of this video that Megan showed me:

Fast forward to 00:35 if your really impatient, but trust me you'll want to watch this a few times. I'm undecided on how much I like this band or not. But this vid, for sure.

2) Maru the Cat

So, this isn't new so you may have already seen it, perhaps I even showed it to you. It makes everyone laugh, alot. What is it about sprawled fat cats that is universally enjoyable? What I just typed reminds me of this great Tapir Vid comment...

Back in GD1 I was working on a project that involved a lot of Tapir Research and lead me into the AMAZING world of tapir videos on you tube (beware of seemingly innocent video titles like "Tapir eating bread" which is really a vid of the tapirs extremly freakishly long penis.) The best part is the comments section! Tapir fanatics and weirdos alike post off the wall comments, I have screen shots somewhere, but here are just some I copied:

Cult of Flowers

I've been getting into flowers pretty heavily this year, and I am considering it for the subject matter of my senior project. Currently I am collecting any and all info about flowers, (cultural associations/uses/whatever.) Let me know if you got some dirt on flowers. For instance, in my Native American art class I learned about "THE CULT OF FLOWERS", which in brief is when the Native Americans adopted floral imagery from the Europeans for use in their bead work. I scanned in these drawings from my sketchbook, which are a bit different from my usually way of drawing. These are of my orchid plant in my room, so they are still life's, I guess.

This I scaned in because every time I flip through my sketchbook in class to find what page I'm on, this page inevitable plops open for all to see. It's somewhat embarrasing, but not really.

Leaves & the 21st Century

I just scanned in this screen print I did last year and wanted to share it with the Internet. It was just a test print, but as you all know success is often unintentional (a.k.a. happy accidents.) I was printing leaves and tested it on some paper that Natalie had test printed her brown eggs on, that accompanied a chicken. It turned out rather magical.

I scanned that in because I thought it would work well as a background for the Illustration I'm working on. This brings us to the 21st Century part: Digital Illustrations! I have colored 3 illustrations digitally so far this semester, which is rare for me, BUT I'm getting into it. I do all the line work by hand, and then scan in and color it with the wacom tablet. In this last one I scanned in textures, and the leaf print so it wouldn't be so flat. It is for 4 events going on in Mpls on a random weekend (Rauschenberg show, hip hop dance, comic con, and Prairie Home Companion) ALSO we could only use pink, yellow, & green. Still not sure about the pink.

This is the first digital piece of the semester, "Berger Hauler" or "The Perfect Summer" about a dude (Will Hayes) who steals a bus for the summer and camps out in a parking lot.

Collages

I started doing some collages for Graphic Design, and they were fun. I copied a million images on the photocopier in various sizes from the image file in the library. This bird is part of a poster for a bird sanctuary.

I thought that^^^ looked sweet, so I wanted to do it again ASAP, and I did for the liner pages of my music catalog for type, HOWEVER, it was very much rejected, not right for the catalog. BUT I still like them.

Ruminations on a Room

This is the second year I am living in my current room. Since I moved to MN, I haven't stayed in one room for too long, so I haven't cared much to personalize them. Bedrooms are important places to think and recover from the day. Some say they are your sanctuary. This can be hard for students and young people becuase we often have to share rooms, move frequently, and live in squalor. I often spend time laying awake on my bed staring at my walls thinking. What is on my walls affects my mood and thoughts because I look at them so often. So, It's good for me to have visually inspiring stuff in my room. Also, as of late actions have been taken to keep my room cleaner. The "Catch All" basket, that I have mentioned before, has been a great tool. It catches everything that you don't have time to put in it's home. Such as clothes, bags, whatever, anything you would have strewn on the floor. It's mere presence encourages me to put things away.

I got this great yellow dresser in the alley by my house, the best part is that it has a light at the bottom! I think it was made to light up your shoes.

Next are my work areas. This desk is also from the alley, it is suppose to be my clean desk for laptop work and studying. And the home of my orchid.

This is my fine art desk for drawing and painting, it hasn't gotten as much use as I'd like this semester.

This one is for Lauren, the door to leave my room is covered in lists and calenders.

On top of my two windows and closet door I have little shelves that I take advantage of.

I hope you enjoyed this tour of my room and would like to see yours, perhaps. I took all these photos with photobooth, so they are pretty low-fi, but they have a strange webcam look that I like.
I keep breaking my record for how late I am staying up doing homework, but still after 3.25 years at MCAD have not "pulled an all nighter", I have always gone to bed for at least a few hours. My semester so far has felt like finals the whole time.

Turning Over a New Leaf

This is a little late, a flyer for a meal of bbq wings Shea made me for dinner after my first day back to school. That was a few weeks ago, but I can still remember how tasty they were. The first time I looked at the poster I didn't even see myself in it!!! Can you find me?
Every school year, every time I clean my room, every time I put off my homework till the last minute, I vow to myself to turn over a new leaf. So far my room has stayed clean, thanks in part to the new implimantation of my "catch-all basket."
Whitney and I went into a chat room tonight. Things have changed since I was 14. Now everyone has a webcam, and if you don't they don't want to talk to you. Also, be cautious about accepting video messages from people. If you're interested in some fun chatroom pranks to pull, ask Dylan.

Rives BFK Tan, Rives BFK Gray, & India Ink

That's all the art for now. As far as my personal life goes: School starts soon and I'm excited to see everyone who's been away. I cut Whit's hair really short, and it makes me want to cut mine, Abby's moving back in and that is good news.

A long time comin'

It's been a while since I've posted, but now I have a lot of stuff to show. This first set of drawings is from this summer, it's two drawings side by side, ball point pen on this weird glossy paper and yellow marker. I didn't know what I was doing when I started the first one, but the theme came out very naturally, (sexy stuff, girls, flowers, hands) and I continued it on to the second page. I picture it as a centerfold for a zine or something with more portraits of girls with the name of a flower, like Rose or Daisy.

This painting is on a glossy fabric sample, and it's not necessarily totally finished, but it was what got me started on all those nude women paintings on wood I posted earlier.

I'm going to move on to a new post to split up the artwork.

These are paintings I was selling at the design fiesta a while ago. While making them I was tyring not to think about selling them, (and I did not sell very many), and I like a lot of them, so I am glad to still have them. Although they will probably change hands at some point. I am particularly into the series of female nudes with the chartreuse green. Here they are just scanned in batches, you can see them in person on top of my window ledges in my bedroom.

I found it again the other day during Studio Kids when we were collaging from old Art Forum magazines and I tore it out and took it home. I think this was the inspiration for my driver's licence picture, but I didn't consciously realize it till after.

I will have more time for linger activities like blog posting. I won't be busy with work till the end of May, so I will have more free time than lingers are comfortable with. I foresee a lot of not being able to get out of bed and regretting wasting time and not being productive.
On a more related note, this blog is about all things Nerdlinger, so I will start with a small sample list of NL activities:
1. Watching "Lost" on the school computers, streaming it from ABC.com on a Sat. night.
2. Don't talk to Strange Nerdlingers, they are harmless but will wrap you up in boring conversations like (Oh, do you live there, I always wondered what it looked like on the inside? Is there a lot of old wood?)
3. Nerdlingers evolutionary younger sibling is the lizardlinger.
4. Whenever you spot a NL in public, you have to point it out to whoever your with, or you by default are a Nerdlinger.
