While reading I kept flipping to the back cover and looking at the author portrait, which features Davis with a cat in front of some ivy. After some image research, I found most of her portraits include cats. Below is my portrait of Davis.</div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 220px; height: 220px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuzggiBJg45JV2UndWU0u7G-oZD2tk9az3vFnEJv-Aq-uKJbB9lLdH4op9AT2moPFIKVEPEq9I6vg0SGhQtbTxrBxeeILHcYs0XEuDupRQeveKCCgAt0_TzeDG8IBpedmvfDM0F3y1zwZA/s400/lydiadavis.jpeg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5684905095870117186" /><div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span"><u><br /></u></span></div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicEcJE8ARtY3JSLkBF1DWOBoj_EaefxeAYy-cWhWSof5uBPkvPBNyY-IgpsPmiLfd8qRHC9nxJCWcpVmEdi-GjOK3MGsRus6GtEwBe9ICQpP6alxl_cCoWnQupQCM-aIqfAFtjV6EETypL/s1600/lydiadavis_kellyabeln.jpeg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicEcJE8ARtY3JSLkBF1DWOBoj_EaefxeAYy-cWhWSof5uBPkvPBNyY-IgpsPmiLfd8qRHC9nxJCWcpVmEdi-GjOK3MGsRus6GtEwBe9ICQpP6alxl_cCoWnQupQCM-aIqfAFtjV6EETypL/s400/lydiadavis_kellyabeln.jpeg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5684904280740693266" /></a></div><div>I decided to do a portrait of the designers behind the fashion label Rodarte, sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy. I recently <a href="http://hammer.ucla.edu/programs/detail/program_id/1012">watched a lecture</a> they gave at the Hammer Museum about their new book, a collaboration with photographers Alec Soth and Catherine Opie. They talked a lot about growing up in Northern California and what an influence their environment was. I included these references in my portrait: the redwoods, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (roller coaster), the Hubble Space Telescope, and the palm trees of Southern California (where they live now.) Little known fact: Kate and Laura grew up in the small town of Aptos, in Santa Cruz county-the same small town that I grew up in! I found this out after following and enjoying their work for some time.<br /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 372px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfBSv_kbw0Q_cR4h7m3-Zgcw_Chszi-Xk7afaZoGiFPBXO4S7H72jfWLmu6CFyOE8R1rJOuI_9_za_AysQQ6uUTd_x-8jYV8OOv0MgCS2A90zFCvvPs75h0q6KN1Td-YKOW-hZqns6nuVX/s400/type_kellyabeln.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5684904271816280002" /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHmohRzHuyvSJqMZ5q3vgSKOrfozjIQyhiW_Kv2A53BCdem6N4whalFnOPxYIXt1h0AhGi20AaPiRk2rapcKfdCqZIa1F4Z3F_4bFP6vKoBjB_OMohquqM5msTNvv4CvsgvY4HKdr5wvOF/s1600/rodarte_kellyabeln.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 394px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHmohRzHuyvSJqMZ5q3vgSKOrfozjIQyhiW_Kv2A53BCdem6N4whalFnOPxYIXt1h0AhGi20AaPiRk2rapcKfdCqZIa1F4Z3F_4bFP6vKoBjB_OMohquqM5msTNvv4CvsgvY4HKdr5wvOF/s400/rodarte_kellyabeln.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5684904272599144738" /></a></div></div></div>Yellow Lillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06052240466850581500noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8559289665453661621.post-62958005970527089572011-09-16T15:49:00.000-07:002011-09-16T16:30:37.688-07:00Cleaning off the desktop<div><br /></div><div>A sampling of 6 out of the hundreds of images on my desktop. It is an after hours, 21+ event with cash bars, food, music and science related entertainment. I'm especially looking forward to the animals the Minnesota Herpetological Society will have on view, like an alligator and TWO types of Sand Boas. You can see more of it on my <a href="http://www.kellyabeln.com/projects/girls--women/">website</a>, purchase it in my <a href="http://www.kellyabeln.com/shop/">shop</a>, or in Jordan's <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/27117251/a5-womens-girls-illustration-zine-with">shop</a>. It feels good to get more printed matter into the world. I had fun designing the format, which has two front covers, liner pages, cut-out dust jacket flaps, sewn binding, lots of different paper stocks/colors, and a fold-out poster! It nearly killed me producing an edition of 50 during my last week in San Francisco, but I'm very happy I did.<div><br /></div><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZExRFlhuIrHJ9gYUjNf6Suy6AfqBQETNeMp69SBlHSw6nE6W1xldPG8SqWeptx9cOHuUvy7CiNqrkRtiBIt_1rJPgN1EPPmNDgWwgy1J5vVp154vxjawZtQvMOpzUX7dCjEQ7RLl4WK6F/s400/Cover_Open.jpg" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 297px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560281757657282098" /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3zOCzi6D7eARp3aZWId2nAMsShg0fTOoQFaeufGWevR6i1tM5rva2jltyKP-YfPS3o2hbJ0ozHrC48-jA_Ijr12a50HoMMYqghHQcgpVkvL1l5wlgvkD6x3az-1tPADHMnRiCTIK1-tbc/s1600/liner2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 307px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3zOCzi6D7eARp3aZWId2nAMsShg0fTOoQFaeufGWevR6i1tM5rva2jltyKP-YfPS3o2hbJ0ozHrC48-jA_Ijr12a50HoMMYqghHQcgpVkvL1l5wlgvkD6x3az-1tPADHMnRiCTIK1-tbc/s400/liner2.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560281777239875138" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAa0S0dqcST8UsJvCW4CPPAM3Dq6XJ4hGuvw203qdbKcxirMy3uvY327g6ZqpNozeSbIxoz5oeigCkFD4B7kqe5UkQbr4YXKQJf5vLZIziYqK_5XkT4BNBv_JEZhIfAFiERhTHRd71oGXh/s400/Interior2.jpg" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560281767089967490" /><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixHwF1F3oxzvPfMDwNfd9vbYz46C1WBUha1YcYYbG_yMel7IWhfhQstc9YABcwfhNiv8ZdGiqkB5CUQazKpNVl1aU19vqr5fSxxCwAYFO8ufiq4v3wCF655HzD5k5v6X3LXYD6qQbuQTaW/s400/Inside1.jpg" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 302px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560281763403969954" /><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge5oatne7vGNb5EQ4NSUp5hIitOfoxKgzSJm-yu-7jCH9svAseqCpmtk4hxm0kKTaEm1wHEVTNT2HtWTPoyKRlNkRxlMeu4oGsUpP9YdpQib6xsVZRmOMQtuhBJjc0rZMi-6z43bHNeA3M/s400/Poster_comp.jpg" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 400px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560281775851467010" /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>Yellow Lillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06052240466850581500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8559289665453661621.post-38736006121040686842010-10-07T14:52:00.000-07:002010-10-07T14:55:03.901-07:003 Works on Paper<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj10sDWKj7znCa4TyBgUYJ2xxQ9e5fvJ2GPqXiEXpg4DK8xHdy1SbGVBYlIwOHEsX9Dal4rjjC2kZG6-uj4AdAKUvkQ2CWJglN03eCqLNrWihP6TW9b0exiRI3PCHHZ6dfTFcHYuwywokuU/s1600/3_paintingsWEB.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 183px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj10sDWKj7znCa4TyBgUYJ2xxQ9e5fvJ2GPqXiEXpg4DK8xHdy1SbGVBYlIwOHEsX9Dal4rjjC2kZG6-uj4AdAKUvkQ2CWJglN03eCqLNrWihP6TW9b0exiRI3PCHHZ6dfTFcHYuwywokuU/s400/3_paintingsWEB.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5525425512430825618" /></a>I've been working at this specific size, a pice of drawing paper torn in half, four times (aprox. 5" x 7"). I read about the magazine's announcement MONTHS ago, and was interested to see what the creators of <i>Fantastic Man</i> would do for a female audience. I hunted for it in NYC, but couldn't find it, I think because by that time it was 2 months old, so it wasn't on the front of newsstands. Also it wasn't available online anywhere. I was complaining to Jack that I couldn't find it, and he was like 'oh I saw like 10 copies of it at the downtown Barnes & Nobel." I happened to be at the Mall of America later and found a copy at their B & N.</div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span></div><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 248px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi5KAJhHRx5UZqcOFPzbRyZYYU1IUw-0A9qJW1Y-oocLuLvqHTELGpd7rQQKbUoiua4zOddNHTKbEtAIV5ZoLImm9Jh-X-WkH1K8wrxIP75wUho_kLhuFwBNq1KQ41w0HR6g8bPd5OpXz_/s400/jenny.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508760611682902642" /></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 248px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhctHPnWLVRwH0q0WrGfrZvqysY3ELjx9RDIeLGg66GeB8AAoUl3DHHK-V-xkCL9s8q3Gm_HmpsJDdE6uIA25UhkubSPkGZdD_XHpwQbLnOFISYJQjWJHq1261CcFyrxMPdRtqAsIg2mIcm/s400/julia.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508761310762985890" /></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"></span>Editor Penny Martin's opening letter slightly blew my mind. She acknowledges that it's fun to reflect on iconic women from the past, but that <i>"a far more interesting question is undoubtedly: who are the women of the future?"</i> This is so true. It's easier to romanticize role models from the past than to recognize the trail blazer's of today. Unlike most mainstream fashion/lifestyle magazines for women <i>The Gentlewoman</i> is light on the beauty, boyfriends and weight loss. As Martin says:</div><div><i><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>"I wanted to make sure that for every one part fashion and celebrity, there would be four<span class="Apple-style-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>parts other things, because this is an exercise in restoring the balance that I remember in<span class="Apple-style-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>publishing. Even in the 18th and 19th centuries, women were writing about travel and<span class="Apple-style-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>education and philosophy, and that's somehow disappeared. My parent's moved while I was in college, so I've never actually lived in this house. However, my parents have had the same appliances and furniture forever, so it doesn't seem that foreign. I've been working on a lot of outdoor projects with my dad. When I was younger I hated having to drag the hose all over the yard to water the plants, and all my other chores. Now I enjoy the gardening and working outside, probably because my normal routine is pretty stagnant. </div><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1Z-AbJPihJ08JrRmBaj0uKSJRyBajYObmfN1isYlGfUGLly2kEI7Q-qrZZEXXAda3IwwuFWYPFqMpNd_Yo_9rGqrYLdrgblh-zvhLcJ97koMdQwyChYiEVBAOmRrXgzHes78knqSsjj1f/s400/parents_yard.JPG" style="display:block; In my high school sewing class we were given old hand outs on all the different types of collars and selves there are, and then we were tested on them! I remember being fascinated by those handouts, and today I tried to recreate one, but I included the type of person that might wear the specific collar.<div><br /><div><br /><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 301px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip7nc7NbbbMCCSKVzVcSVTvTqx6m2Ikh9DSEy0rw9t9R_zcA34vOMU39IK7lC_GCnUQPcAnCCd4JNv4l6YPu_fbgrp96wXJUJURcmWArawwF1ltqbDyvCICh_wudnLXmWtcjR4q844FWQj/s320/portrait_zoom.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403456528322069346" /></div><div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div></div></div></div>Yellow Lillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06052240466850581500noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8559289665453661621.post-60996434352751977942009-10-14T11:18:00.001-07:002009-10-14T11:30:55.942-07:0010 Little Things<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8Jyp9xrhLzOXHjcHV5xXhbLTB9jjrkPJBNxpmJpfFrkp0e4wW6HUgwYsaYZI7ExmY2PEQQp7QnLKSkHLPw59Ajv-9FZqxRbBujk1uDrK9Pg4NOnT9Mps9YYsDbDGvNnb5RZ7eaG6z1zrN/s1600-h/10_little_things_web.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 236px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8Jyp9xrhLzOXHjcHV5xXhbLTB9jjrkPJBNxpmJpfFrkp0e4wW6HUgwYsaYZI7ExmY2PEQQp7QnLKSkHLPw59Ajv-9FZqxRbBujk1uDrK9Pg4NOnT9Mps9YYsDbDGvNnb5RZ7eaG6z1zrN/s320/10_little_things_web.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392521858544952034" border="0" /></a><br />1) Adorably illustrated graduation card from my Grandma.<br />2)"WILD" Intaglio print by Abigail Mullen.<br />3) Last shot of a photobooth picture strip from the Turf Club.<br />4) Ticket to a performance of "The Lion King" at a young student's house.<br />5) A piece of a "Regular" box of tampons.<br />6) Love Letters mailbox eraser on a headphones jack.<br />7) Jody Williams book, open to my favorite spread.<br />8) My collection of Arc's Value Village tags.<br />9) Picture of my mom.<br />10) Many years old newspaper clipping of Elliott Smith.<br /><br />Instructions:<br />1) Gathered 10 little things from around your room that are special for some reason.<br />2) Arrange them and scan all at once. It's really exciting to hear someone else describe COF besides myself! I've read Bitch since high school, and it has been an inspiration for me personally and for the creation of COF. I hope everyone who was involved in COF check's this out and knows I couldn't of done it without them. I also set up a <a href="http://www.kellyabeln.com/index.php?/shop/">'shop'</a> to sell some copies of COF on my website. P.S. I also recently added a <a href="http://www.kellyabeln.com/index.php?/project/sketchbook/">sketchbook</a> section too!</div>Yellow Lillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06052240466850581500noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8559289665453661621.post-17837822118897122022009-09-01T17:33:00.000-07:002009-09-01T19:16:30.821-07:00All you need is a garden & a girl<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiNzz43fCaRONP2jYFuXc2i8Lk_35vNUZsl5pUtGzprifNNQ03gcyAKgohCaBwaSeijzA8Hj3TqtloYGbGGIQ_BLLWXV-0_iiAFP7yvPOURUW4ThBb-j_kjxo1ygIDqSSQiLbEzlnSE0Y-/s1600-h/hotel_lady.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 189px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiNzz43fCaRONP2jYFuXc2i8Lk_35vNUZsl5pUtGzprifNNQ03gcyAKgohCaBwaSeijzA8Hj3TqtloYGbGGIQ_BLLWXV-0_iiAFP7yvPOURUW4ThBb-j_kjxo1ygIDqSSQiLbEzlnSE0Y-/s320/hotel_lady.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376686552491082546" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_yDgNaqGzp9TU9ckpLkwfTCSM49JVoJv-quumCEtDbcL5zfa_d_k4kJFCrt0mxkAsiPYMxHZ5MBtuteqhSk5c5F0qHMROmw_xGM3__JekQkgHOUMmVuRMIb9FWGnCqq29lpyVWilMRTXC/s1600-h/Capitola+Gardens_web.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 216px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_yDgNaqGzp9TU9ckpLkwfTCSM49JVoJv-quumCEtDbcL5zfa_d_k4kJFCrt0mxkAsiPYMxHZ5MBtuteqhSk5c5F0qHMROmw_xGM3__JekQkgHOUMmVuRMIb9FWGnCqq29lpyVWilMRTXC/s320/Capitola+Gardens_web.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376686435744435474" border="0" /></a>Drawing of a lady in a hotel, and a postcard from Captiola Gardens, CA.Yellow Lillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06052240466850581500noreply@blogger.com3
